Conducting Realistic Experiments in Software Engineering
نویسندگان
چکیده
An important goal of most empirical software engineering research is the transfer of research results to industrial applications. Two important obstacles for this transfer are the lack of control of variables of case studies, i.e., the lack of explanatory power, and the lack of realism of controlled experiments. While it may be difficult to increase the explanatory power of case studies, there is a large potential for increasing the realism of controlled software engineering experiments. To convince industry about the validity and applicability of the experimental results, the tasks, subjects and the environments of the experiments should be as realistic as practically possible. Such experiments are, however, more expensive than experiments involving students, small tasks and pen-andpaper environments. Consequently, a change towards more realistic experiments requires a change in the amount of resources spent on software engineering

متن کاملExperience from Measuring Program Comprehension - Toward a General Framework
Program comprehension plays a crucial role during the software-development life cycle: Maintenance programmers spend most of their time with comprehending source code, and maintenance is the main cost factor in software development. Thus, if we can improve program comprehension, we can save considerable amount of time and cost. To improve program comprehension, we have to measure it first. Howe...
متن کاملAn Environment for Conducting Families of Software Engineering Experiments
The classroom is a valuable resource for conducting software engineering experiments. However, coordinating a family of experiments in classroom environments presents a number of challenges to researchers. Understanding how to run such experiments, developing procedures to collect accurate data, and collecting data that is consistent across multiple studies are major problems. ADVANCES IN COMPU...

متن کاملAn Empirical Study to Evaluate a Domain Specific Language for Formalizing Software Engineering Experiments
The research about the formalization and conduction of controlled experiments in software engineering has reported important insights and guidelines for conducting an experiment. However, the computational support to formalize and execute controlled experiments still requires deeper investigation. In this context, this paper presents an empirical study that evaluates a domain-specific language ...
